TSX Today: Market wrap-up for July 22, 2010

The TSX powered ahead to a triple-digit gain on Thursday, climbing 154.43 points to 11,667.76, as gold and oil both moved higher, while the TSX Venture added 22.86 points to 1,388.42.

Most TSX subsectors ended the day in positive territory including metals and mining, which recorded a 4% gain, as well as the TSX global gold index, which climbed 1.2% as gold for August delivery moved $3.80 higher to $1,195.60 an ounce. Gold stocks on the move included Kinross Gold (TSX: T-K), up 3.7%, and Yamana Gold (TSX: T-YRI), which added 0.8%.

Elsewhere, the energy sector added 1.5% as crude for September delivery jumped 3.6% to $79.30 a barrel.

In economic news, Statistics Canada reported that retail sales slid 0.2% to $36 billion in May, with lower sales reported in six of 11 subsectors. Sales in volume terms increased 0.4%.

On the TSX, shares of Norbord Inc. (TSX: T-NBD) gained $1.14 to end the day at $12.64, as the company reported its second quarter results, including earnings of $37 million or 85 cents per share, compared with a loss of $18 million or 42 cents per share in the same quarter last year. The company, which produces wood-based panels, also said that its operating North American OSB mills ran at approximately 100% of their capacity in the second quarter compared to 85% in the prior quarter and 80% in the same quarter last year.

And on the Venture, Premium Exploration (TSX: V-PEM) announced assay results for the first three holes of the ongoing Phase-Three drill program at the Friday-Petsite project located in Idaho. Highlights include 0.98 g/t gold over 203 metres including 2.61 g/t gold over 21.03 metres in PFR2010-1. Shares of Premium Exploration added 8.5 cents to close at 46.5 cents.
